Summer 2018 Newsletter

“Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” Albert Einstein

The 2018-2019 school year will be here before we know it.  The new school year will bring about opportunities to celebrate the future of Brevard Academy and honor our past.  On August 20, we will be celebrating our 20th year of educating students.  The school was founded in 1998 and we have seen quite a few changes since then both at the school and in the world.  In order to give students some perspective of life in 1998, we are asking for donations of artifacts from the late 90’s.  These items will be on display in our Core Knowledge Corner.  If you have an old walkman, a CD, a newspaper or magazine, we would love to borrow it.  Look for an email and Facebook posting for an order form regarding our limited edition 20th Anniversary uniform shirts.

We look forward to the next 20 years at Brevard Academy.  We will be gathering items to place in our time capsule and have the students discover in 2028!  Think about sharing with your child what was important to you 20 years ago that is still important today.  Is it a thing, an idea, a value, a person?  These conversations will get our students thinking about their legacy and what they want to leave for the next generation of bulldogs.

The future for Brevard Academy is bright.  We have secured a grant from Specialized to expand our Mountain Biking Program.  In early September, we will receive approximately 30-40 mountain bikes to give all students access to a lifelong sport.  These bikes will also be incorporated into our middle school PE program.  A big thank you goes out to Emily Page, Middle School Social Studies and Mountain Bike Coach, for putting the grant together.

We are adding a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Music) program that will work with all grade levels to further enhance our students understanding of science and expand their hands-on learning opportunities.  Ms. Cyndi Speciale will be directing this program, and I am excited by the ideas we have begun to discuss. Please see the list below for items to donate to our STEAM program.

While we are saying goodbye to some dear staff members, I am committed to finding the best teachers possible to help us fulfill our mission.  Mr. Jason Wolfe will be joining us as our 6th grade Social Studies and Language Arts teacher.  Ms. Charlotte Shackleford is joining our kindergarten team as our kindergarten teacher.  Both are well known to the staff and the Brevard Academy community and bring a great passion for learning with them.  Ms. Lori Luhrs joins us from Buncombe County to head up our EC Department as well as other federally funded programs.  Ms. Rebecca Kiel and Mr. Tim Arem are joining our EC staff as a teacher and assistant, respectively.

Over the summer, we want our students to continue to read and work to expand their educational horizons.  I encourage all students to get involved in the area library summer reading program.  If your child completes either one of these challenges, he/she will earn a mini Kona Ice. We also have summer enrichment programs available in our office. If your child completes both activities, he/she will earn a small Kona Ice.  You will also be able to find enrichment and summer reading suggestions on our school website.  I encourage you to use this resource to look ahead at what is coming.

I also encourage you to come to our July Get Together.  It  will take place on July 17 at the school from 5:30-7:00 pm.  This is an excellent time to reconnect with friends and make new ones. The PTO will be holding a consignment sale and we will have new uniforms for purchase as well.

Remember that our summer office hours are 9:00-3:00 Monday-Friday.  You can stop by and purchase uniforms during this time.

Thank you for your continued support.  We know that you have a choice in education, and we are honored that you have chosen Brevard Academy.

It is a privilege to serve as your director.  Have a wonderful and rest of your summer.

In appreciation,

Ted Duncan
