Mr. Duncan’s Sunday Message–May 28, 2017

May 28, 2017

Good afternoon,

This is Ted Duncan, Director of Brevard Academy, I hope that you have a chance to spend time with your family and loved ones over the weekend.  Each school day, we have a moment of silence to reflect before we begin the day.  I encourage you all to take a moment of silence tomorrow to remember the brave Americans who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

And now this week’s announcements and events.

End of Grade Testing Information

3rd – 8th grade parents received a letter last week from Mrs. Best regarding specific testing dates for their students and tips on how to help them succeed.

Lunch Ordering for June

Lunch ordering for June is currently open.  During the month of June, lunch will be available June 1-June 9.  The cost for June lunches has been reduced to $3.50/lunch.  Monday, June 5th is Zaxby’s chicken sandwich day.  All balances must be used in June as they will not carry over to next year.  Lunch will be served at 12:00 during EOG testing days.  Please contact Ms. Lefler at if you have questions or need assistance.  If you need financial assistance, please contact Ted Duncan at

If you have volunteered with us in any way this year we invite you to join us for a volunteer appreciation luncheon on June 8th from 11:30-12:30 pm in our school gym. If you can attend please rsvp to Trudy Pierron at

Athletic Banquet

The athletic banquet will be held on Tuesday May 30th from 5:30-7:00. Please bring a camping chair for your family as we have already received a great deal of RSVPs.  Please contact Coach Jones at if you have any questions.

Design for Change

Our middle school students are currently in the midst of a pet supply drive.  If you have gently used or new pet supplies that you would like to donate to area animal shelters, there are boxes available in the front office.  We will also be hosting a pet adoption event at the school on Friday, June 2 from 3:00-5:30 pm.  Please let your friends know.

Bus Survey for 2017-2018

We are collecting interest in bus use for the 2017-2018 school year.  If you are already signed up for a bus, you do not need to re-register.  However, we need you to complete the survey in order to hold your spot.  If you are interested in bus service, please fill out the attached survey.  Remember, bus transportation is the safest way to get to and from school.

PTO Meeting- Monday, June 5th at 8:00 am

Please save the date for our last PTO meeting of the school year!  We will meet in the resource room on Monday, June 5th at 8am and hope to see everyone there!

Fidget spinners are not allowed on campus.  We want to make sure that all students are attending to instruction.  These items can become a distraction.  We use research-based strategies to help students focus if a need is present.  Please speak with your child’s teacher if you feel like you need to discuss interventions for your child.

After School

We still have openings available on drop in or weekly basis.  We have a great Lego collection, fun board games, and terrific art projects.  If you are interested in learning more, please contact Philippa Hackett at

Middle School Design For Change Initiative

For the past several months, the middle school students of Brevard Academy have been involved with the Design For Change during their Outdoor Education time with Mountain Roots. Design for Change is a global youth movement of students who are changing the world. Brevard Academy’s middle schoolers are among these leaders– investing time, energy, and heart into addressing needs in our community and working towards change (more information on DFC is available at:

Our students brainstormed an incredible amount of options and projects that could serve our community and recently narrowed it down to three main projects. Each middle school student is working with one of the following groups:

1. Creating a school garden to foster healthy living and education around the importance of growing and eating healthy foods through a garden on our very own school grounds.

2. Serving the elderly in our community by doing both a drive for supplies and visiting several different nursing homes to lift up some of our senior citizens.

3. Helping some of the animals in our community to find homes and provide supplies that they need.  The collection will take place the week of May 22.  Please send in any lightly used or new donations.

As a student-directed initiative, you will be hearing more from the students regarding the specific needs of each group.  Please check your email for more specific information.

Thanks for supporting our Design for Change efforts and creating real engaged citizens in our student body!

Please continue to collect and send in BoxTops with your child!  We have collected more than $1,200 this school year and can continue collecting through the summer. We will send another BoxTops collection flyer this week so be sure to check your child’s book bag. Remember, ALL of the money raised with BoxTops goes directly to your child’s classroom field trip fund!

Still Enrolling for 2017-2018
We are still enrolling students.  Although we have a waiting list in several grades, we encourage interested families to apply and get on the waiting list.  Tell a friend what you love about Brevard Academy.

Thank you for supporting your child’s education.

Have a great rest of your Sunday and…Go Bulldogs!
