Mr. Duncan’s Sunday Message–May 14, 2017

May 14, 2017

Good afternoon,

I hope you all had a good Mothers Day.  My mom played a huge role in my life and helped to shape my values and beliefs.  Scholars, if you have not said so already, tell your mom thank you.

Announcements

Talent Show

Did you know Brevard Academy’s Got Talent? Our students are going to show off their fabulous talents on Tuesday evening. The event starts at 6:00 pm in the gym, so get there early to grab a seat and some tasty concessions!  With performers from first through eighth grade, you won’t want to miss this spectacular variety show!

Admission is $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. Money raised will benefit our various arts programs at Brevard Academy. Concessions will support the eighth grade class end of year field trip.

Bring your family and friends for what is sure to be an entertaining evening. We hope to see you there!

Soccer News

The soccer team will depart at 3:00 pm on Monday to travel to Trinity Christian School to participate in the soccer tournament beginning at 5:00 pm.  Good luck, Bulldogs!

After School

We still have openings available on drop in or weekly basis.  We have a great Lego collection, fun board games, and terrific art projects.  If you are interested in learning more, please contact Philippa Hackett at pjhackett@brevardacademy.school.

Middle School Design For Change Initiative

For the past several months, the middle school students of Brevard Academy have been involved with the Design For Change during their Outdoor Education time with Mountain Roots. Design for Change is a global youth movement of students who are changing the world. Brevard Academy’s middle schoolers are among these leaders– investing time, energy, and heart into addressing needs in our community and working towards change (more information on DFC is available at: http://www.designforchange.us/).

Our students brainstormed an incredible amount of options and projects that could serve our community and recently narrowed it down to three main projects. Each middle school student is working with one of the following groups:

1. Creating a school garden to foster healthy living and education around the importance of growing and eating healthy foods through a garden on our very own school grounds.

2. Serving the elderly in our community by doing both a drive for supplies and visiting several different nursing homes to lift up some of our senior citizens.

3. Helping some of the animals in our community to find homes and provide supplies that they need.

As a student-directed initiative, you will be hearing more from the students regarding the specific needs of each group.  Please check your email for more specific information.

Design For Change Notes for this upcoming week include:

The raised beds for our school garden will be built by our garden group, parent volunteers, and the Mountain Roots staff on Tuesday May 16th from 12:30-4:00 pm. If you are available to help with this construction process, please contact Mountain Roots Director, Ali Lien at ali@mountainroots.org or 828-384-4629. The garden group is also asking for supplies–tools, soil, compost, and cash donations to get this garden growing for our students. See the flyer sent home last week for specifics.

The groups working with our elderly population and animal adoption are also running supply drives–so look for more information on how you can help these groups to help our community as well.

And finally, the animals group will be running a Hat & Jeans day for Friday May 19th. For the donation of $1 (or more) to this group on Friday May 19th, your child may wear a hat or jeans ($2 for both) to school to raise money for educating our community about properly caring for the furry members of our community.

Thanks for supporting our Design for Change efforts and creating real engaged citizens in our student body!

BoxTops
Please continue to collect and send in BoxTops with your child!  We have collected more than $1,200 this school year and can continue collecting through the summer. We will send another BoxTops collection flyer this week so be sure to check your child’s book bag. Remember, ALL of the money raised with BoxTops goes directly to your child’s classroom field trip fund!

Still Enrolling for 2017-2018
We are still enrolling students.  Although we have a waiting list in several grades, we encourage interested families to apply and get on the waiting list.  Tell a friend what you love about Brevard Academy.

Check your email and our webpage for volunteer opportunities and the events for the week.

Thank you for supporting your child’s education.

Have a great rest of your Sunday and…Go Bulldogs!
