End of Year Newsletter

“Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

John F. Kennedy

This past year, Brevard Academy took on some significant changes.  The most significant, of course, being our move into a new building.  With our first year almost under our belt, we look to improve and build a better tomorrow for the students and families at Brevard Academy.  Our building will allow us to increase our enrollment and decrease our student to teacher ratios.  We are currently in the process of hiring several assistants in order to provide an assistant in every classroom grades K-5.  Our new building will also allow us to develop the outdoor space in order to best serve our students.  Please look for opportunities and ways to get involved in our facilities committee in order to improve the campus and the outdoor space around the campus.

We will say goodbye to several staff members at the conclusion of this year.  Third grade assistant Lola Kemick and her family will be returning to Florida this summer in order to be closer to family.  Fifth grade teacher Bronwyn (Harris) Flood will be pursuing her doctoral studies at Appalachian State University.  Middle school science teacher Dana York is moving to our sister school Shining Rock Classical Academy.  We wish these wonderful educators well and we know that our paths will cross again soon. Fourth grade teacher Crystal Holland will be leaving the classroom in order to support our middle school classrooms.  Although we are saddened that she will no longer be seen on medieval day tossing a caber, we are excited to keep her expertise on campus.  Fifth grade teacher Katie Gibson will be taking Ms. Holland’s place in fourth grade.

I am currently in the process of interviewing potential new staff members to join the team and help to make Brevard Academy the best it can be.  We have hired Alex Gaye for our middle school science position and Amber Wolfe to fill one of our 5th grade positions.  I encourage you to keep an eye on our Facebook page.  We will post hiring announcements there and let you know when our new staff members will be on campus and available to chat with families.

The future of Brevard Academy and all those associated with it is bright.  We are excited to begin year two in our new, permanent home.  I pledge to you that we will find the best educators to fill our current vacancies.  We will not settle for just any teacher.  We are looking for dedicated educators who keep the interests of every child they teach at the forefront and constantly ask the question, “What can I do to help this child learn?”

Over the summer, we want our students to continue to read and work to expand their educational horizons.  I encourage all students to get involved in the Transylvania County Library Summer Reading Program.  I also sent home a list of Summer Activities to be completed by students in grades 1st-4th.  If your child completes either one of these challenges, he/she will earn a mini Kona Ice.  If your child completes both activities, he/she will earn a small Kona Ice.  You will also be able to find enrichment and summer reading suggestions on our school website.  I encourage you to use this resource to look ahead at what is coming.

I also encourage you to come to one of our many family gatherings throughout the year.  The first get together we have planned is on June 22 from 6:30-7:30 pm.  The event will take place on campus.  Kona Ice will be on hand so be certain to bring your wallet if you are interested in a tasty treat.

Thank you for your continued support.

It is an honor to serve as your director.  Have a wonderful and restful summer.

In appreciation,
Ted Duncan
