BA-CFA Sunday Message–August 12, 2018

August 12, 2018

Good afternoon,

This is Brevard Academy School Director, Ted Duncan, with important information for the week ahead.  Welcome back the to the Brevard Academy and the 2018-2019 school year.  As always a complete listing of all events, news, and activities can be found on our website and in your email.

Our staff is back on campus and spent last week preparing for a terrific year ahead.  Although it can be difficult to say goodbye to the relaxed pace of a summer schedule, we are all anticipating the first day with great energy and enthusiasm.

New Staff

We are excited to welcome Robert “Senor Mac” McCarson as our new Spanish Teacher.  He is a native of Transylvania County and graduate of Brevard High School.  He has experience working with members of Congress and corporations in Latin America.  He is the founder of “La Voz,” Western North Carolina’s Spanish Newspaper. He is eager to begin his teaching career with us and creating a dynamic Spanish Program at Brevard Academy.

Thank you Ms. Winston

This week we said goodbye to Amy Winston.  Ms. Winston has accepted a position with Jackson County Early College.  After 18 years at Brevard Academy, she felt it was time to pursue a teaching position that allowed her more time to work on her own artistic practice and work closer to home.  We wish Ms. Winston well in her new position and she has promised not to be a stranger.  Her nephew, Winston Warner, an artist in his own right, will be filling in until we have a permanent replacement.

Meet the Teacher

Monday, August 13–Drop by between 12:00-1:30 pm or 5:00-6:30 pm. We will have uniforms for sale, information on athletics, lunch sign up, and community partners on hand as well.

Kona Ice will be on hand during the afternoon session to help keep us all cool.

Quixote’s will be on campus during our evening session serving up great food and answering questions about our lunch program.

Teachers would appreciate it if you would please drop off classroom supplies during Meet the Teacher.  Please be aware that the classrooms are only open to visitors during the Meet the Teacher hours.  Our staff is working to complete necessary trainings and get everything in its place for Wednesday.  We appreciate your understanding in advance.

Teacher Assignments

If you did not receive your child’s teacher assignment in the mail, the assignments will be available in the front office.

First Day of School

Our first day back for the 2018-2019 school year is August 15.  We need 100% attendance on this day.   Our funding is based on our attendance for the first 20 days.  If you are not present on day 1, you run the risk of losing your spot as we have wait lists in all grades.

Parking for Meet the Teacher

We expect big crowds for Meet the Teacher.  Please use caution in our parking lot and follow the directions of staff to safely park and exit our campus.

Lunch Ordering is Open

Lunch ordering is now open for August orders. It will close on Monday, August 13 at midnight. However, we can help parents sign up until Tuesday, August 14 at noon. Please call Juli Lefler at 828-885-3112 if you need assistance. All of the sign up information is on our webpage under Student Life tab. September lunch ordering will open Monday, August 20 and close on Monday, August 27.

Authorization to release child and Car Placards

At Meet the Teacher, you will get a packet of information that will include car rider placards and emergency release information.  These items need to be filled out and returned to school as soon as possible to ensure a safe and efficient dismissal process for your child.

Family Handbook Updated and Online

We have made some revisions to our Family Handbook.  The full handbook, Code of Conduct, and Consequence Chart can be found online under the Student Life tab.  If you need a hard copy, please let your child’s teacher know.

Areas to review are as follows: early drop off, uniforms, transportation changes, attendance, and student medication.  All families are required to review this information with their child annually.

20th Year Celebration

We will be celebrating our 20th year on August 20th. Look for details to come on our website and Facebook page.  Start digging through your attics and basements to help us show our students what the world looked like in 1998.  You are able to RSVP for the event on our webpage.

If you plan to attend, please be certain to bring a lawn chair and an umbrella.

Uniforms

We are partnering with Big Frog T-Shirts this year.  You can order directly from our website and choose either home or school delivery.  Don’t wait to order your uniforms now.

Beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, students may wear spirit wear on Mondays only.  Spirit wear is defined as any BA-CFA athletic or BA-CFA club related shirt.  Students who earn a dress down pass may dress down on Fridays only. We hope that this change brings about clarity and consistency for students, parents and our staff regarding non-uniform days.

Bus Information

Please check our webpage under the Student Life tab to sign up for bus service.  Even if you rode last year, you must sign up again for service this year to ensure your spot.
